MIL-STD Context: What Your Shielding Has to Do

Most airborne and ground-based defense programs verify electromagnetic compatibility against MIL-STD-461 (equipment-level) within a MIL-STD-464 system-level environment. Two requirements drive most shielding decisions:

  • RE102 (radiated emissions) — the enclosure, its apertures and every gasketed seam determine whether internal clocks and switching noise stay inside the box.
  • RS103 (radiated susceptibility) — the same shield has to keep high external field strengths from upsetting sensitive circuits.
